UK and European expansion plans
Luna Logistics provides specialist transport, warehousing and technical services to technology companies. It installs and services IT, print and ATM equipment and similar devices.
The company had ambitions to expand its network and client base across the UK and into Europe. It recognised that good transport links would be essential and it also needed advice on suitable property and the recruitment of specialist staff.
The Essex logistics advantage
“Locating in Essex was an ideal choice for us as the transport links are so good,” says Briege Leahy, co-founder and Managing Director for Luna Logistics.
The company chose Harlow in Essex for its proximity to London and excellent transport links to the rest of the UK via the M11 and the national motorway network. Harlow is also just 16 miles from London Stansted Airport, the UK’s second largest airfreight terminal, offering access to 200 cargo destinations worldwide.
Fast track to business in Essex
Although Essex offered many advantages to a company like Luna Logistics, Briege Leahy admitted that she didn’t know the area at all.
The INVEST Essex team provided information on properties in the area and introduced Luna Logistics to important business contacts such as accountants and solicitors.
“Businesses considering Essex as a base can get assistance with land and property searches to identify potential sites, as well as key market and socio-economic data,” says Liz Parkin, Inward Investment Manager at INVEST Essex.
“We also help with staff recruitment, skills and training, as well as information on schools and accommodations for incoming employees,” she explained.
“INVEST Essex couldn’t have given us better service, they provided an excellent choice of properties and information on essential local services,” says Briege Leahy. “They were really helpful.”
The right base
Luna Logistics were initially looking for 4,000 square metres of warehousing space, technical center and offices in Harlow. The INVEST Essex team was able to identify a range of properties and put the company in touch with suitable contractors to carry out conversion work.
When a global leader in digital document management awarded Luna Logistics a prestige contract, the company needed to recruit skilled staff to carry out specialist installation and maintenance. It also had other important contracts in the pipeline.
“INVEST Essex put us in touch with Job Centre Plus for recruitment support,” says Briege Leahy. “We were able to build a team for our initial needs and subsequent expansion.”
“Once a business has located in Essex, the INVEST Essex team continues to provide support,” says Liz Parkin. “We want businesses to grow and prosper in the county.”
From its Harlow base, Luna Logistics has already expanded. It has taken on a further 1000 square metre warehousing unit, and now employs more than 20 people.
“Thanks to organisations like INVEST Essex, we have been able to set up our business quickly and access all the services we need,” says Briege Leahy.
