EC Group, based in Grays, is one of the country’s leading fulfilment houses, offering an integrated range of services including a telesales team to handle enquiries and orders, secure storage and warehousing facilities, and a picking and packing service handling a range of products. All services come with full back-up provided by the company’s account management team which looks after customer service queries and provides comprehensive reporting.
This bespoke third party logistics service provides what is effectively an extension of a client’s own operation without the investment in staff, premises and equipment.
EC Group is the longest established fulfilment house in the UK with origins going back to 1810. Its Grays site was established in 2005 and serves both local and national clients. EC Group finds that it is able to recruit the right people locally with a permanent staff of 65 and a pool of temporary workers to deal with seasonal peaks in workload.
Location is critical to a company like EC Group, as Gavin Weekes, Business Development Director, explains,
“Many of our clients are based in central London. They feel that we are conveniently situated ‘down the road’ for meetings and local service. Grays is just two minutes from the M25 and the M1 is only 45 minutes away. That makes it easy for us to work with clients throughout the UK, as well as London. We have our own fleet of vans to collect and deliver locally and for regular collections and deliveries in central London. For national distribution, we use a range of specialist carriers according to our clients’ various requirements. Tilbury docks is close-by which makes it easy to collect imported products and London Stansted Airport provides good airfreight facilities close to our warehouse.”
Space is also important for any company in the logistics sector.
“Large warehousing becomes more expensive the closer it is to London,” says Gavin Weekes, ” but Grays gives us the space we need and, because it’s so close to the motorway network, it is a great location. We have plans to increase our capacity on the site through an extension to one of our existing buildings and through the construction of a new unit to house our print-on-demand facility”.
With its dependency on good transport infrastructure and affordable, high-capacity storage space that contributes to operational efficiency and reduced costs, Essex has certainly proved to be an important location to EC Group.
