World class data centre operator Kao Data has announced the opening of Kao London One, the first of four data centres to be built at Kao Data Campus, in Harlow. The £200 million campus, currently under construction, represents one of the largest developments in the UK and adds substantial capacity and future organic growth opportunities for customers.
The campus is located in the London-Stansted-Cambridge corridor 20 miles north of London Docklands and 30 minutes from London Liverpool Street. Once completed, Kao Data Campus will support an IT load of over 35MW across 150,000 sq. ft bringing vital capacity to meet City and London-Stansted-Cambridge technology requirements.

Kao London One which has opened ahead of its official opening ceremony is designed to provide 100% uptime.
“The ever-expanding data economy continues to drive the need for IT capacity. Kao London One provides highly resilient capacity and connectivity for national and international businesses. We believe that our strategic location and premium campus solutions offers an exceptional proposition to customers across a wide range of sectors, providing them with significant competitive edge.”

The need for data driven centres
Big data and data analytics centres are already proving to be of enormous benefit to many businesses in aiding to improve operational efficiency, customer experience and create new business models. It has become increasingly rare for new companies to launch into the wholesale data centre market as the entry barriers are too high given the funding requirement and the lack of suitable sites with sufficient owned power, land and connectivity.
The Kao Data Campus site comprises four 8.8MW datacentres, each divided into four 2.2MW Technology Suites. It will be the only campus within 30 miles of London to combine:
- 150,000 sq ft technical space
- 200,000 sq ft of grade A office space
“The provision of high specification data centre facilities is essential in order to maintain the UK’s position at the epicentre for technological excellence and a global hub for business connectivity.”
Paul Finch, Chief Technical Officer, Kao Data
Harlow at the forefront of new technology
Harlow's growing reputation as a science-led town began in the sixties with the development of fibre optic technology by Nobel Prize winner Charles Kao at Standard Telecommunication Laboratories (STL). Today, in its place is the Harlow Enterprise Zone, a new development for advanced manufacturing and life sciences/medical technology businesses in which Kao Data is located. The data centre marks the continuation in technological development in Harlow since the first development of fibre optic technology on the site 50 years ago.
“As the birthplace of fibre optics, Kao Park has the legacy, workforce and supporting infrastructure to provide a world class data centre campus. We believe this model – which is a first for the UK – can create a genuinely innovative and virtuous ecosystem of tenants which will spawn research breakthroughs.”
Mark Trevor, Senior Director, Cushman & Wakefield
